Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are peanut butter cookies dairy-free?

Traditional peanut butter cookies often contain butter, but these peanut butter cookies are dairy-free because they're made without butter or other dairy ingredients.

Can I make peanut butter cookies without butter?

Yes. These cookies are made without butter, using a simple dairy-free alternative that gives them a classic peanut butter cookie texture.

What kind of peanut butter is best for peanut butter cookies?

Creamy conventional peanut butter works best for these cookies. Natural peanut butter can have a different consistency because the oil tends to separate, which can affect the texture of the dough.

Why do peanut butter cookies have fork marks?

The traditional crisscross fork marks help flatten the cookies so they bake evenly. They also give peanut butter cookies their classic appearance.

Can I use crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy?

Yes. Crunchy peanut butter can be used if you prefer pieces of peanuts throughout the cookies. The texture will be slightly different from cookies made with creamy peanut butter.

Can I make dairy-free peanut butter cookies ahead of time?

Yes. You can prepare the cookie dough ahead of time and refrigerate it until you're ready to bake. You can also bake the cookies ahead and store them for later.

How should I store dairy-free peanut butter cookies?

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They should stay fresh for several days.

Why are there typically crisscross marks on peanut butter cookies?

When Americans started making peanut butter cookies in the early part of the 20th century, the dough was heavy. The crisscross marks were because the cookies were flattened for even baking and became a classic signature of peanut butter cookies.
