Putting deli rolls together:
Roll out the puff pastry dough into a rectangle.
Spread your condiments over the dough (not shown here).
Then, lay deli meat out in overlapping layers (below are turkey slices with salami slices on top) on the dough. Then, tightly roll from the long side.

Spread egg wash on top or, if you don't want egg, do what I did below and just lightly wet the top and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.

Make small cut lines on the top of the roll before baking to make it easier to slice later.

Some cooking terms
What does it mean when recipes say "to taste" about an ingredient?
When recipes say "to taste," it means that you can put in as little or as much as you like to your own taste. Some recipes have many ingredients that a cook can adjust to their own taste when cooking (not so much when baking though).
The best way to calculate what your taste is with a recipe that you are not yet familiar with is to first taste the dish and then add the "to taste" ingredient GRADUALLY, a little at a time-a splash of this or a pinch of that-until the dish is just the way you like it.
Make sure to stir the ingredient after each time you add it so that the flavor will distribute evenly and become part of the dish. Then taste again. Repeat until you reach your personal preference.
Note: If you plan on using the recipe again, it is highly recommended to make a note of what and how much you added so that you can refer to it next time.
What does it mean when a recipe says that an ingredient is "optional"?
If an ingredient is "optional," it means that you can add it in or not based on your own preference. An optional ingredient can be flavor-related (i.e., salty, sweet, spicy, etc.), appearance-related (garnish), or even something like nuts or chocolate chips in baking.
What does "savory" mean?
"Savory" refers to foods that are not sweet, such as foods that taste salty, spicy, or herbal.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I make kosher deli rolls ahead of time?
Yes! You can assemble the deli rolls a day in advance, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, and store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake.
Can I freeze baked or unbaked deli rolls?
You can freeze unbaked deli rolls by wrapping them securely before baking. Bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the total baking time. Freezing after baking is not recommended because the puff pastry can lose its flaky texture.
What deli meats should I use for a kosher deli roll?
Traditional New York Jewish deli rolls feature a combination of layered deli meats such as pastrami, corned beef, and salami, and turkey, on top of a spread of condiments.
Are these puff pastry deli rolls dairy-free?
Yes, using standard store-bought puff pastry (which is typically oil- or margarine-based rather than butter-based) along with kosher deli meats makes this recipe dairy-free.
How do I keep the puff pastry from getting soggy?
To keep the pastry crisp, avoid overloading it with excess wet condiments. Spreading a thin, even layer of condiment directly onto the pastry or layering the deli meats securely should trap the moisture and ensure a flaky crust.
What should I serve with a deli roll appetizer?
Deli rolls are traditionally served sliced into bite-sized rounds alongside dipping sauces like spicy brown mustard, honey mustard, or Russian dressing, plus kosher dill pickles. Alternately, you can slice them into individual rolls before baking.
What is needed to make Kosher Puff Pastry Deli Rolls?
I hardly ever meal plan, so I like to keep a cupboard full of seasonings, spices, veggies, and canned goods in my kitchen to use whenever the mood strikes.
But these are all you need to have on hand to make this recipe even last-minute!
