What is stroganoff?
Beef Stroganoff (or Stroganov) is a classic Russian dish made with sauteed beef and a sour cream sauce. There are legends about how the dish was created, but it was first made sometime in the 1800s and named after one of the members of the Stroganov family. Since then it has been recreated all over the world, with multiple variations.
And chicken stroganoff is one of them!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What can I serve chicken stroganoff with?
You can serve chicken stroganoff mixed with noodles or over mashed potatoes. Both are delicious with the creamy, savory sauce.
Can I use chicken breast or chicken thighs?
You can use either chicken breast or boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Chicken breast keeps the dish lean, while thighs will give you a slightly richer result.
Can I make chicken stroganoff ahead of time?
Yes. You can prepare it ahead and refrigerate it until you're ready to serve. Reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a little liquid if needed.
Can I substitute another type of meat?
Yes. If you don't want to use chicken, ground turkey or another lean meat can be used instead. Keep in mind that the cooking time may change depending on the meat.
How do I store leftover chicken stroganoff?
Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator. Reheat gently and add a little liquid if the sauce has thickened.
Can I freeze chicken stroganoff?
Yes. Store the cooled stroganoff in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
