Loco Moco is a contemporary and popular Hawaiian dish of a beef burger over rice, topped with a sunny-side-up egg, and generously covered with beef gravy.

This easy recipe, however, uses soy burgers instead of meat. And you can use your own favorite vegetarian gravy-I used onion soup mix.

And you can add toppings of your choice, such as fried onions or mushrooms, or whatever you like to customize this recipe.

Plus, you can use leftover fluffy rice for this budget-friendly dish!

It's a simple, satisfying meal that's perfect for a quick lunch or a cozy weeknight dinner.

And if you don't want to use a soy burger, a veggie burger swap will work just fine!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is loco moco?

Loco moco is a popular Hawaiian dish traditionally made with a hamburger patty served over white rice, topped with a sunny-side-up egg, and covered with brown gravy.

The story behind the creation of the Loco Moco is that a group of teenagers in the late 1940s wanted an inexpensive meal that was quick to eat, so the diner they frequented came up with this dish.

They named the dish after a friend that they called Loco, or crazy, and moco just rhymed with it.

Today in Hawaii, Loco Moco is considered a fast food and is sold at fast food restaurants, diners, small eateries, and food trucks.
